When you delete a file from your computer, it is actually still there. The storage medium inside your device is referenced by a file table.
This table contains a list of all file names and their locations. Instead of physically deleting the data, only the entry from the table is deleted freeing that space to be overwritten. When you next try to save a file, the operating system will look at the table to distinguish free available space, overwriting any data that was previously stored there. This is why it is important in the event you have mistakenly deleted data to switch off your device as soon as possible and make sure you do not save anything further to the disk.
In Our Workshop:
A specialized disk-scanning procedure will take place and is used to recover every readable bit from the surface. Once this image is acquired and saved on an external reliable medium, the image can be safely analyzed for logical damage and will possibly allow much of the original file/ file system to be reconstructed.
